Where preparation earns its place
Cartilage — helix, conch, daith, industrial — is a different proposition from a lobe, and people who have had both usually say so. Several piercings in one appointment stretch a brief moment into a longer one. And if the last appointment left you dreading the next, arriving prepared is a reasonable thing to want.
A standard lobe is a single, brief moment — the honest answer for that one is in the FAQ below.

None of the three is "better" than another — each is formulated for a different kind of session. A piercing appointment is one of the shortest things in the range, so Clinical is the sensible default and the upper strengths are there for cartilage or a multi-piercing sitting.

Before you buy: ask your piercer first
Studios have protocols, and yours may have a view on arriving with anything applied — particularly around a site that has to be marked accurately and cleaned before it is pierced. Ask when you book rather than on the day. If your piercer says no, that settles it. And if you are being pierced by a reputable studio, they will talk you through what to expect anyway, which is worth more than anything we can put on a page.

Do I need numbing cream for an ear piercing?
For a standard lobe, most people don't — it is a single brief moment and plenty of people book one without a second thought. The cases where people tend to prepare are cartilage and several piercings in one appointment.
Which strength for a piercing?
Clinical is the sensible default — a piercing appointment is one of the shortest sessions in the range. Cartilage or a multi-piercing sitting is where Advanced makes sense. If you're between two, start with the lower one.
Is cartilage different from a lobe?
People who have had both generally say so, and cartilage sites — helix, conch, daith, industrial — also take considerably longer to settle afterwards. Your piercer is the right person to talk you through what your specific placement involves.
Will my piercer mind?
Ask when you book. Studios have their own protocols, particularly around a site that has to be marked accurately and cleaned before it is pierced. If your piercer asks you not to use anything, follow that.
Can I use it on a nose, navel or nipple piercing?
Senseless is applied to clean, unbroken skin, and it is not for use in or near the eyes or on mucous membranes. Beyond that, your piercer knows the placement and their own protocol — ask them before you book.
What about afterwards?
Aftercare is your studio's instruction to give, and a fresh piercing is broken skin — Senseless is not applied to it. Follow the aftercare routine your piercer sets.
